Immortal is a pioneer black metal band from Bergen, Norway. The band was formed from the remnants of Amputation, a death metal band from 1989.

Biography

Immortal's early full-length releases were of a traditional black metal style, but their acclaimed album At the Heart of Winter saw the band begin to experiment with a complex fusion of black metal and German thrash metal. The resulting sound was a style which characterized Immortal's later works. Immortal has been influential to many modern metal artists. It has arguably maintained the most occult-mysticism image and way of life traditionally credited to black metal. Their peculiar musical style of black metal has guaranteed them a spot on the list of the best bands in the history of the genre, and with recent (2006) mid-price reissues of their classic back catalog in major markets (i.e. North America), their music is now much more widely available.

Amputation recorded their first two demos in 1989 with Demonaz Doom Occulta on guitar and vocals, Jørn Inge Tunsberg on guitars, and Padden on drums.[1] The group later reformed as Immortal around 1990-1991. Their third demo, Unholy Forces of Evil, saw a stylistic change to black metal and earned them a record contract. Tunsberg played many of the guitar parts of Immortal's first album Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, but is not officially credited.[citation needed]

Gradually, Immortal gained immense popularity in the underground, releasing several highly-acclaimed records on the French label Osmose Productions. Their highly acclaimed album from this period, Pure Holocaust, served as a genre-defining milestone.

In 1995, the band released two video clips directed by British artist David Palser, entitled Masters of Nebulah Frost, through Osmose Productions. They featured many bizarrely-shot images of frozen landscapes and vast forests. These clips have become the template for many other bands producing such works.

Apart from the two core members Abbath and Demonaz, Immortal did not find a stable lineup until 1996, when drummer Horgh joined the band. In 1997, Demonaz (then main lyricist and guitarist) suffered acute tendonitis in the arm and was unable to continue playing. Still, he continued writing new material and managed the band, while bassist Abbath took over the guitar duty. In 2000, Immortal signed a record contract with German label Nuclear Blast; this change to a more prominent record company didn't affect their style, something which they proved on their record Sons of Northern Darkness.

Immortal decided to split during the summer of 2003 for personal reasons of the band members. However, in mid-October 2005, Abbath, Demonaz, and original Immortal drummer Armagedda reunited, and along with ex-Gorgoroth bassist King ov Hell and Enslaved guitarist Arve Isdal, they began work on a new project, dubbed I. This new band entered the studio at the end of April 2006 to record their debut album and was released November of 2006. Demonaz is the primary lyricist for the band.

In early June 2006 came word via the German magazine Rock Hard that Abbath and Horgh would resurrect Immortal once more. Abbath is quoted as saying:
“ I didn't really want to say it, but I don't give a shit. We will come back, stronger than ever. I've met with Horgh for the first time in over a year. He's built his new house here, right around the corner. In the next few days we will begin to rehearse our old 'Blizzard Beasts' classics. I'm already really hot on the idea. Immortal are timeless frost. One year more or less doesn't make a difference. We have all the time in the world. ”

In July 2006 it was announced that Immortal would reunite for a string of summer shows in 2007. They will headline the Inferno Festival in April, the Tuska Open Air festival in June/July, Metal Camp festival in July, and the Wacken Open Air festival in August. They will also make two concerts in the United States in July 2007. Filling in as bassist for these dates will be the Aura Noir bassist Apollyon.[2]

After the reunion, Abbath and Horgh decided to reform the band and have been hinting at a new album to be released with-in 2008. This was confirmed by Demonaz in a recent interview with Eternal Terror. Apollyon is also now an official member of Immortal.

NECROPHAGIST was founded in early 1992 to integrate the fury of grinding, fast death metal with progressive music. Shortly after the band formed they entered the studio and recorded their first demo tape entitled 'Requiems of Festered Gore.' 'Requiems of Festered Gore' was never released to the masses as it was sent out solely for promotional reasons in an attempt to help the band secure gigs.


In 1995, NECROPHAGIST re-entered the studio and recorded a self-titled, follow-up demo. The demo’s impact sent shock waves through the European underground death metal scene, which helped NECROPHAGIST not only establish their gruesome name, but allowed the band to play numerous shows all over Europe. Soon NECROPHAGIST was recognized as one of the leading bands in the growing underground progressive/technical death metal scene.


In 1999, NECROPHAGIST recorded their self-released, full-length debut 'Onset of Putrefaction.' Despite the limited number of copies that were made, 'Onset of Putrefaction' only solidified the growing reputation that NECROPHAGIST had started with their self-titled demo. Soon, NECROPHAGIST became the standard for progressive death metal. Uniting influences from different styles, including classical music, 'Onset of Putrefaction' showcased NECROPHAGIST’s demanding dexterity, inhuman brutality and fury.


With 'Onset of Putrefaction' NECROPHAGIST reanimated the brutal death metal genre that many had left for dead. 'Onset of Putrefaction' actually became an influence for hordes of young musicians and fledgling European death metal bands. The overwhelming response to 'Onset of Putrefaction' helped NECROPHAGIST secure highly sought after support slots with such extreme music luminaries as CANNIBAL CORPSE, NAPALM DEATH and SINISTER. This attention further blossomed into NECROPHAGIST’s appearance at numerous festivals, including the Fuck The Commerce in Germany, the legendary Brutal Assault in the Czech Republic and the Maryland Deathfest in the United States.


Now in 2004, NECROPHAGIST have signed to Relapse Records and are prepared to unleash the crushing 'Epitaph' on a pitiful and unsuspecting world. Once again NECROPHAGIST have pushed the boundaries of technical and progressive Death Metal to new heights, setting an extreme standard by which others will follow. Obituary is one of the pioneering bands of the death metal genre. The band hailed from Tampa, Florida, founded as Xecutioner in 1985. Shortly before the release of their debut album, they changed their name to Obituary. They still remain an influential band of the Florida death metal movement that arose in the late 1980s. Their 1990 release Cause of Death is hailed as a seminal album in the genre, and vocalist John Tardy is recognized as one of the first vocalists to use an abnormally low growl (compared to the screechy growls used by predecessors Death and Possessed).

The band disbanded in 1997, and reformed in 2003. During the hiatus, Donald Tardy played in Andrew W.K.'s touring band, going as far as to wear an Obituary shirt during W.K.'s appearance on Saturday Night Live, Allen West focused on his two projects, Lowbrow and Six Feet Under. Iron Maiden is a New Wave of British Heavy Metal band from East London. Formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris, previously of Gypsy's Kiss and Smiler, it is one of the most successful and influential bands in the heavy metal genre, selling over 70 million albums world-wide. In 1988, a thrash metal band by the name of Siren's Yell was formed in the Swedish town of Strömstad. Its members were Jon Nödtveidt, Ole Öhman, Peter Palmdahl, and Mattias Johansson. The group recorded a single demo before breaking up in 1989. Nödveidt and Öhman continued on to play in the band Rabbit's Carrot, in which they claim to have never felt quite at home (especially Nödtveidt). Nödveidt was leaning more and more towards death metal and other forms of dark extreme music. Dissection was officially formed in the autumn of 1989 by Nödveidt, who had since left Rabbit's Carrot. Dissection's line-up, however, was not complete until early the next year when John Zwetsloot joined.

In 1990, Dissection played their first live show with death metal act Entombed. In the same year, they also recorded and released their first demo, The Grief Prophecy. It contained three songs and featured illustrations by the artist known as Necrolord, who has since created nearly all of Dissection's album art. A special edition of The Grief Prophecy was later released in memory of Dead, the former vocalist for the notorious Norwegian black metal group Mayhem, who committed suicide in 1991. The special release featured album art drawn by Dead himself. Dissection also played a live show in his honor, at which they performed the Mayhem song "Freezing Moon". The Grief Prophecy was soon spread through the underground, and the French record label Corpsegrinder Records offered Dissection a deal to record an EP. Later that year, Dissection accepted the deal and recorded Into Infinite Obscurity. The band continued to tour.

In 1992, Dissection began work on their first full-length album, The Somberlain. Because of coordination problems between members, the entire band moved to Gothenburg, Sweden (where they shared a rehearsal space with At the Gates) in the summer of 1993. The album was finished and released the following December. It was formally dedicated to Euronymous, the then-guitarist of Mayhem, who had been murdered earlier that year.

During November of 1994, Dissection signed a record deal with the well-known German label Nuclear Blast. In 1995, the band's second full-length album, called Storm Of The Light's Bane, was released. The following year, Dissection also released a short EP entitled Where Dead Angels Lie. It was compiled from previous rare and import releases, and contained only cover songs and demo tracks.

In 1997, Jon Nödtveidt was convicted for helping to murder a 38-year old homosexual man in Gothenburg. He was released in the autumn of 2004. Since then, Nödtveidt has formed a new line-up for Dissection with none of the previous members participating. Subsequently, Dissection recorded one two-track EP entitled Maha Kali and toured heavily with the "The Rebirth of Dissection" tour. In 2006, Dissection released their third full length album "Reinkaos" through their own label, in association with The End Records. Shortly after the release, in May 2006, in an online chat interview, Dissection announced plans to split following a short tour, including only two US dates(Though the US dates were cancelled due to Nödtveidt's incarceration, forbidding him from entering).

The band played its final European concert in Stockholm on Midsummer (24 June) 2006.

On August 16, 2006, frontman Jon Nödtveidt committed suicide. Nödtveidt's death was confirmed by the Swedish distributor Sound Pollution, whose staff has worked with Dissection throughout the band's career. History

Warslut formed the band following his departure from the cult black metal band Bestial Warlust. The project at first was solo but soon picked up other band members. The band's debut, Violence is the Prince of this World consisted of K.K. on all string instruments, as well as vocals, and two drummers (simply credited as "Chris and Matt") alternating filling in for drums. This early outing is considered different from the rest of their output because of it's similarities to Death Metal, and lack of melody (except for the song "The Eternal Glory of War", which was later rerecorded for Phoenix Rising).

The band went on to record three more full lengths; Unchain the Wolves, Phoenix Rising, and Cold Steel... For an Iron Age. Their sound on these albums can be described as a blend between black metal, death metal, and thrash metal. The band has changed their style slightly on each album, for example, the album Unchain the Wolves, considered to be their finest by many fans, has a less head-on and aggressive sound than later albums such as Cold Steel... for an Iron Age, which uses a more bombastic and hard-hitting tone.

Like most extreme metal bands, lyrical themes usually consist of War, Satan, Anti-Christianity, and so on. Deströyer 666 are also known for their affinity towards wolves, and a constant use of them in metaphorical lyrics. Examples include the songs "Unchain the Wolves", "Lone Wolf Winter", "Sons of Perdition", and "The Calling".

Recent Updates

The band has relocated to Europe, with K.K. in The Netherlands and other members spread throughout the continent. A reissue of their album Cold Steel... for an Iron Age was scheduled for late 2005, but as of March 2007, has still not come to light. It is supposed to feature all new artwork (the artwork for the original release was used by Season of Mist without their consent) as well as bonus songs. The band is also working on a new LP containing all of the songs previously released on 7" vinyl. Deströyer 666's former drumsmith Deceiver who's stick craft can be heard on 'Satanic Speed Metal' & 'Phoenix Rising', is best known in the underground metal scene for his unique drumming style dubbed "rib winching". Deceiver spent two years in Singapore's notorious Changi prison after being convicted of small arms trafficking (a crime he was later found innocent of) after his subsequent release & return to Australia he went on to form Nocturnal Graves. Deceiver currently resides in Antananarivo, Madagascar & is a close relative of 1992 Australian of the Year, Mandawuy Yunupingu.

Carcass was a British death metal/goregrind band formed by Napalm Death guitarist Bill Steer together with drummer Ken Owen in 1985. They were based in Liverpool.

On their first demo, an Indian named Sanjiv did the vocals. In 1987, bassist and vocalist Jeffrey Walker, formerly of the Electro Hippies, joined them. Carcass are considered by many to have been one of the most influential and talented bands within the death metal scene.
The band focused on topics mostly relating to the medical field and bizarre combinations of medical equipment and chemicals with human anatomy, such as "Intenacious, intersecting / Reaving fats from corporal griskin [...] Skeletal groats triturated, desinently exsiccated". This lyrical focus led many in the music press to falsely believe that one or more members of the band had studied medicine. There is more evidence to show that this lyrical focus was a method of pushing vegetarianism (For example, "Exhume To Consume").
